A natural hazard is an extreme natural event that causes loss of life, significant damage to property and disrupts human activity.

Types of natural hazard:

  • Earthquake
  • Volcanic eruption
  • Flood
  • Tropical storm
  • Landslide
  • Drought

Factors which affect the risk of a natural hazard:

  • The magnitude of the hazard
  • The frequency of the hazard
  • The size or area affected by the hazard
  • The population density of the country affected
  • The level of development of the country affected
  • The education and training of the people affected
  • The ability of the infrastructure to withstand the hazards
